Bodeker Scientific is an atmospheric research company based in New Zealand, specialising in understanding the upper atmosphere and climate change. The company works with both local and international research organisations such as the German Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, USA).
In 2014, Bodeker Scientific organised the SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate) General Assembly. Bodeker used this opportunity to encourage delegates to offset the emissions to and from the conference in Queenstown, New Zealand, with all delegate contributions being matched dollar-for-dollar by Air New Zealand. Bodeker Scientific have also purchased carbon certificates to ensure that all their company related travel is carbon neutral.
UBoC calculated the emissions associated with the Bodeker employees and SPARC delegates air travel and provided carbon certificates from the Trees of Hope project in Malawi.
Trees of Hope is certified by Plan Vivo, which provides a guarantee that not only does the project sequester carbon, it also provides community benefits and supports sustainable livelihoods, addressing the root cause of deforestation.
“Climate scientists face a challenge – their quest is to prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system, but in undertaking that quest need to collaborate with colleagues globally, which often requires international travel. As such, they tend to have carbon footprints that are significantly higher than those in societies they are cajoling to reduce their carbon emissions. Bodeker Scientific has therefore made a pledge to ensure that all company related travel is carbon neutral. We do this by purchasing carbon credits through the UBoC Trees of Hope project. UBoC was also used to provide the option for delegates to the January 2014 SPARC General Assembly, which Bodeker Scientific organised, to offset their travel-related carbon emissions. Bodeker Scientific encourages other organisations to make use of the professional services provided by UBoC to offset carbon emissions.”
